House endorses Vermont Yankee cleanup bill

With hardly any debate and no opposition, the House voted Tuesday to back a bill that would require Vermont Yankee to set aside more money for eventual cleanup of the Vernon nuclear power plant.

Tuesday’s 139-0 vote stood in stark contrast to previous years’ efforts that would have required far more money to be set aside and were vetoed by Gov. Jim Douglas.

House Natural Resources and Energy Committee Chairman Tony Klein, D-East Montpelier, who has been pushing for Vermont Yankee’s closure in 2012 and to beef up decommissioning funds for several years, said this bill found a balance.
