Dear Mr. Pacilio:

On October 25, 2013, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) completed an inspection at your Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. The inspection covered one or more of the key attributes of the security cornerstone of the NRC’s Reactor Oversight Process. The enclosed inspection report documents the inspection results which were discussed on October 25, 2013, with Mr. Patrick Navin, Plant Manager, and other members of your staff.

The inspection examined activities conducted under your licenses as they relate to security and compliance with the Commission’s rules and regulations and with the conditions of your licenses.

The inspectors reviewed selected procedures and records, observed activities, and interviewed personnel.

No findings were identified during this inspection.

Three Mile Island Emergency Siren Test Scheduled for Dec. 5
Sirens to Sound for Three Minutes at 12:15 p.m. EST

LONDONDERRY TWP., PA (December 3, 2013) – Exelon Generation will conduct its semi-annual, full volume test of the new emergency warning sirens on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 12:15 p.m. EST.  With the installation of the new siren system, TMI is moving to a semi-annual full volume test schedule. 
The next test will be held during the first week of June 2014. 

Exelon Generation replaced all 96 emergency warning sirens in the 10-mile radius around Three Mile Island with new, state-of-the-art units featuring battery back-up power. The siren replacement project began in October 2011 with the new system placed in service in September 2013.

The Three Mile Island siren investment is part of Exelon Generation’s commitment to replace and upgrade the emergency sirens at all of its sites in the mid-Atlantic, including Limerick Generating Station, Peach Bottom Generating Station and Oyster Creek Generating Station.  This project involves a total investment of more than $11 million and the replacement of 400 sirens.

The continuous 3-minute tone alerts our neighbors to tune to an Emergency Alert Broadcast Station for information from Pennsylvania state officials.

Three Mile Island Generating Station is located approximately 12 miles south of Harrisburg.  The plant generates enough carbon-free electricity for 800,000 homes.

National Academy of Sciences' Pilot Planning Study of Cancer Risks in Populations Near Seven Nuclear Facilities, (12/11/13)

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee tasked with planning the pilot study of Analysis of Cancer Risks in Populations near Nuclear Facilities is scheduled to hold a public meeting at 2-4 PM on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at the National Academy of Sciences Building located at 2101 Constitution Avenue, NW (Room 125). A draft agenda for the public meeting is attached.

Study at a Glance

NAS will perform the pilot study of cancer risks in populations near seven U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (U.S.NRC)-licensed nuclear facilities using two epidemiologic study designs: (i) an ecologic study of multiple cancer types of populations of all ages and (ii) a record-linkage-based case-control study of cancers in children. The pilot study will have two steps: Pilot Planning and Pilot Execution. NAS has started the Pilot Planning step which is estimated to take one year to complete.

The seven nuclear facilities that are part of the pilot study are:

Millstone Power Station, Waterford, Connecticut
Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station, Forked River
New Jersey Haddam Neck, Haddam Neck, Connecticut
Big Rock Point Nuclear Power Plant, Charlevoix, Michigan
San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, San Clemente, California
Nuclear Fuel Services, Erwin, Tennessee
